What areas does the Internet provider cover? Do they only have service in one local area? Are they a regional or national provider? Extensive coverage is especially important for protecting dialup customers from telephone toll charges. Toll charges, when coupled with a monthly Internet access fee, adds up quickly. Be wary of programs that offer you unlimited access for a low monthly fee because you may be responsible for long distance charges. You might receive an unwelcome surprise on your phone bill.
If an Internet provider is offering a program that sounds "too good to be true" then it probably is! Look, not only for a competitive price; but for a provider that protects the quality of your connection and understands the costs of doing business. In other words, look for a provider who will not over sell their services and bandwidth.

What type of support will you receive in the case of an emergency? Is on-site support available? Ask any potential Internet provider what their policy is on busy signals. You are paying for Internet access, not for busy signals. How likely are you receive a busy signal when connecting to their network? Are there certain times of the day you might encounter a busy signal? What type of monitoring capabilities do they have to protect customers from busy signals?
Accessibility, performance, and reliability are essential components of a quality Internet connection. Does the Internet provider oversell their bandwidth? Do they promote programs that their connection cannot support? What processes are in place to manage the quality of their bandwidth? Do they have a plan in place to upgrade and expand their bandwidth as needed? Maintaining bandwidth performance is key to a quality Internet connection.
Remember, you are the customer... How are you treated when contacting the Internet provider? Was your call or request handled in a professional and timely manner? What qualifications does the provider have? What investment is made in nurturing their intellectual property? Demand for the Internet is intense, but, there is no excuse for bad customer service.

Look for a provider that is focused on providing an Internet solution and not just a connection. Such as World Wide Web Services? Domain Name Services? Onsite installation assistance? Security services? Fulfillment of telecommunication circuits, software and hardware? Network consulting? Select a provider who is focused on solutions.
